Repair and unit replacement

The maintenance model for bagged armor is inspect, and replace what needs replacing. Not “maintenance free,” which is a claim worth being suspicious of on any armor system, and not “repair a section,” which is what rigid and cabled systems require.

Replacing a single unit

The bank asks whether one damaged unit can be replaced without removing the surrounding units, and this is the practical advantage of a unit-placed system.

Because each unit was placed individually and is held by weight, friction, and contact with its neighbours rather than by cables or grout, one can be lifted out and another set in its place.

What that means:

  • Repair scales with the damage, not with the system
  • No dewatering is normally required, since the replacement is placed the same way the original was
  • The rest of the installation keeps working while the repair happens
  • The plant needed is the same plant that placed it

Mesh damage

The bank covers what should be done if a section of mesh becomes exposed or cut.

The construction limits the consequence: a raschel weave resists tear propagation, so a cut does not run through the fabric. Damage stays roughly where it happened. See raschel weave explained.

What to assess:

How much fill has been lost. A unit with a cut and its fill intact is in a different condition from one that has emptied and slumped.

Whether the damage is spreading, on a repeat inspection.

Why it happened. A single cut from a debris strike is an event. Abrasion wear across many units at the same elevation is a pattern, and it points at a mechanism — bedload, ice, or vessel contact. See puncture, abrasion, ice, and debris.

That last distinction matters more than the individual repair. One damaged unit is maintenance. A row of damaged units at the same level is the site telling you something about the design.

Undermining, which is the urgent one

The bank asks how localised undermining is repaired before it spreads beneath adjacent units, and the phrasing carries the point: it spreads.

A void beneath one part of the armor is not a local defect. Flow moving through it continues to remove material, the void enlarges, adjacent units lose support, and the failure travels.

Signs, from what failure actually looks like:

  • Units sitting lower than their neighbours
  • A step down at the perimeter
  • Level survey showing a drop against the baseline
  • Probing that finds loose material where consolidated bed should be

The repair generally involves filling the void and addressing why it formed. If the cause is winnowing — fines drawn out from beneath the armor — then filling it without resolving the filter question means it will form again. See why scour protection fails.

If the cause is the bed lowering across the reach, no local repair fixes it. That is degradation, and it is covered in contraction, local, and degradation scour.

Displaced units

Units moved by flow, ice, or impact.

Replace or reposition, depending on their condition and where they went.

Note the direction, because it identifies the mechanism. Downstream means flow. Shoreward or up the bank suggests ice. See ice damage to bank protection.

Ask whether the layout was right. Repeated displacement in the same place is a design signal, not a maintenance item.

Extending the protection

Not a repair, but it uses the same property.

Where inspection shows erosion developing just beyond the protection, units can be added at the boundary to extend the coverage. That is easier and cheaper than the alternative on a continuous system, and it is why the honest expectation for these installations includes some addition over time.

Keeping the record current

Every repair changes the as-built.

  • What was replaced or added, where, when
  • Why, and what the assessed cause was
  • Updated levels afterwards

Without this, the next inspection is comparing against a baseline that no longer describes the installation. See post-installation inspection.

The maintenance expectation, stated honestly

A realistic position for a site with meaningful loading:

Inspect at a defined interval and after significant events. Expect some unit losses over decades, particularly in ice, abrasion, or debris environments. Budget a small annual allowance for replacement rather than assuming none.

A supplier telling you a mechanically hostile site will produce no losses over thirty years is making a claim about their marketing rather than their product.
