Cold weather installation

Concrete in winter needs heating, protection, and a longer cure. Bagged armor does not, and on a cold-climate job that is a genuine advantage rather than a marketing point.

It is not the same as saying winter work is easy.

What the absence of a cure actually buys

No temperature limit on the permanent works. The unit is armor as soon as it is filled and placed. There is nothing setting, nothing to keep above a temperature, and nothing to protect for days afterwards.

No weather-related quality risk to the material. Concrete placed badly in cold conditions is compromised permanently. Stone in a mesh is stone in a mesh.

Work can stop and resume without a partially cured element to worry about. On a winter site where conditions change fast, that matters. See placement sequence and coverage.

Frozen fill

The main production problem.

Aggregate stockpiled outside in freezing conditions freezes into a mass, particularly if it contains fines or moisture. Frozen stockpile does not flow, does not load evenly, and produces lumps rather than a graded fill.

Practical responses:

  • Keep the stockpile covered and drained so water does not accumulate and freeze through it
  • Work from the face rather than letting material sit
  • Break out and turn the stockpile ahead of the shift rather than at the start of it
  • Watch the fill quality, because frozen lumps produce voids inside a unit that appear when they thaw. The unit then loses shape and effective mass. See fill stone selection

That last point is the one to be careful about: a unit filled with frozen material can pass a volume check and lose fill volume when it thaws.

Ice on the water

Two distinct problems.

Ice as a working constraint. Surface ice affects access, barge operation, and placement. Working around or through it is a marine operation with its own risk assessment. See barge and vessel-based placement.

Ice as a design load. Separate from construction, and in a northern climate it frequently governs the design rather than the flow does. Ice lifts units, shoves them shoreward, and abrades the mesh. We hold no citable ice-abrasion data and say so. See ice damage to bank protection.

If you are building in winter in an ice environment, both questions apply, and the second one belongs in the design rather than the method statement.

Crew and plant

  • Shortened daylight, which compresses the working day and interacts with any tidal or flow window
  • Cold exposure, particularly for anyone working at or in the water. Cold water incapacitates quickly regardless of swimming ability. See safety during emergency placement
  • Hydraulic plant performs differently cold, and warm-up is real time
  • Ground conditions change with freeze and thaw. Frozen ground bears well; the same ground in a thaw does not, and a standing position sound in the morning may not be at four o’clock
  • Icing on rigging and lifting points, which is an inspection item before each lift

Whether you are allowed to work at all

The question that decides it, and it is frequently overlooked in favour of the technical ones.

In-water work windows are set by the life cycle of aquatic species, and in many jurisdictions the permitted season is summer or a shoulder period. A cold-climate site may have a window that excludes winter entirely, whatever the construction method allows. See in-water work windows.

So the sequence is: find the window first, then work out whether winter construction is even a question.

Where it is genuinely an emergency, provisions exist and they are a determination by the agency rather than an assumption by the applicant. See emergency permitting.

Where winter work makes sense

  • The in-water window falls in the colder months on that waterbody, which does happen
  • Low flow in winter, on some regimes, making in-water work easier than in spring
  • Frozen ground improves access for plant on soft sites, which is a real advantage where the alternative is a boggy summer approach
  • Emergency response, which happens when it happens
  • The asset cannot wait
